Seeking Suggestions for Good Books

My book group meets in two days to nominate, campaign and elect the titles we'll read this year. It's our group's homegrown caucus. Everyone brings book lists, descriptions, and reviews, then presents their recommended roster. We tally the books that have twins or triplet recommendations and they are guaranteed a spot in the final 10. Each person is assured that at least one title on their list makes the cut.

Maybe this year we use web 2.0 to enhance or deepen our choices, our reading and our reflections. We're starting a wiki and maybe we'll use google.docs before and during the discussions, posting our questions and responses for non-attendees. And there are groupies that have their nose in new book each week, we we'll put the total list of all books even mentioned on campaign night. So they can read them all. We'll use iCal to reschedule meeting dates with conflicts.

Scouring the Hennepin/Minneapolis Public Library websites led me to lists from the Washburn and Northeast Book Clubs which led to a Sherman Alexie title, to his official website and then to his essays and poetry. Geez, I love the way that guy's writing is all poetry, is all music and magic. And funny, in an often tragic way. Reading his stuff makes me dizzy like falling... in love.

What I meant to get around to is that we can do Amazon-like book reviews at Edison HS. A Library Aide requirement is to recommend two books/semester and post them on the media website. Maybe some English class can add to that or the football coach will post his favorites. I want Mr. Williams, Director of Congenial Hospitality at the Front Door, and the Ameri Cor staff/kids to give reading suggestions.

And I'd like to go finish my recommended reading list with some titles we have at our library. Cheerio.
